Malin I. Karstens

I am interested in human cognition, particularly in sustained and selective attention. For example, I study how our attention fluctuates and decreases over time and how we maintain focus while getting distracted.

In my role as Research Scientist, I am responsible for some of the experimental setup including some coding in Python and integration with the brain stimulation system. Furthermore, I will prepare and carry out the home testing sessions.

I am also a third-year PhD student in Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford. In my research, I address which paradigms and measures of behaviour and the brain accurately represent attention skill. To study brain patterns, I use electroencephalography (EEG), pupillometry, and non- invasive transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), with a focus on transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS).

Before, I worked on a project investigating the development of mathematical ability in children and young adults as a research assistant with Prof. R. Cohen Kadosh. In 2019, I completed my MSc in Behavioural and Cognitive Neurosciences at the University of Groningen, NL, during which I worked on working memory and gained my first experience in the modulation of attentional performance through tRNS.
